Canim

I've found a love for Turkish Coffee. I knew about this love several years ago upon first taste and have asked for it where available, even though subsequent cultures (I'm looking at you Greece) yelled at me for calling it *simply* Turkish Coffee (each country thinks of it as its own). I now have the cezve, the beautiful fincan to serve it in, and a rapidly diminishing amount of Mehmet Efendi (think Starbucks, Turk version)*. I'm drinking it several times a week. I liken it to Crack. I obsess over getting the "foam" just right.

I've also learned to make a very traditional, simple Baklava that takes so much time to prepare. Know how many sheets of Phyllo are in a frozen bunch? I do. It's 20. 40, if you cut it in half to fit in the pan for the deliciously nutty sweet. Guess how many of those sheets need to be buttered? Uh huh. Just guess. But seriously, ignore my complaining. It really is quite amazing and worth it. Ask my roommates.

I'm growing rather attached.

*Leave it to Jamie to go to land of Starbucks, Tullys and Fuel... and acquire the obsession for Turkish Kahve.

Highs and Lows

I'm really trying this whole writing daily (or weekly? hehe) thing again.

  • I had a rough night. Mostly because I'm not getting my way and damn it! Damn it Damn it Damn it! But then I cried a little, listened to good sappy music, and complained to B over text 3000 miles away.
  • I'm headed to San Francisco over Thanksgiving! I'll be visiting my high school friend Rachael and her partner. I don't think I've seen her in 3-4 years.
  • I forgot how much I liked bullets.
  • The end.

334

I find it good luck that my "last" post was number 333. I guess it's time for me to be not so lucky.

It's hard for me to admit how much I really do miss writing, even in a casual setting such as this. I was asked to write a letter of recommendation for an old coworker- of course I was obliged to do it, but it felt awkward. I was out of practice. I was uncertain with the things I was able to do so long ago. I don't mean this silly place to grumble and make light of good and bad. Did you know what an awesome writer I was at the Office? Do you have any idea the words I could come up with when my preshus internet was in jeopardy??!? Heh heh.

Seriously, I'm finding it hard to go through the motions of my life. I miss my grandfather. I miss my grandmothers (living and dead). I miss my family. I miss my kids. I miss my friends.

I'm also happy here for the most part. I'm dating. Somewhat successfully. I'm in a somewhat healthy environment with mostly awesome roommates, a few close friends to go out with, and jobs that I am becoming very happily settled into. It's hard. I had all of these things at home in DC, especially in the months right before I left. The difference that Seattle was supposed to bring into my life was a new drive to finish my STUPID F---ING BSN!!!!!! How is it that I am listed at the school as a new student... but I have yet to actually register? Mostly money. I am just now coming into the positive in my finances. I put money into savings for the first time in 5 months! Yay! But there is also that settling-in factor that makes me look at my life and think, "maybe later". I don't think later will work anymore. I think later will just encourage postponing and it will be, well, later. Much later. Never later.

I am also eating up all the liberal awesomeness that comes with this town. Mostly. Sometimes I do want to kick someone in the teeth for all the passive-aggressive bullshit that follows. Did you know that in some areas (Seattle) people get health care and food for free or discounted rates? Seriously. And I will freely admit that I LOVE FREE DUMPSTER BREAD. There. It's been said. And you would understand if you lived with Hippies. God, I love those hippies sometimes. But I may scream if I'm reminded to turn off my light again- just saying.

My life, as usual, is messy. My life, as usual, is not as bad as it seems... nor as bad as it could be. I'm reminded of this daily. Here's to trying to become less messy.

Liz Phair - my first big Seattle Concert, of course

Liz was smoking hot. As usual. No signage of my ticket, we were all kicked out at the end.

But I loved it. And I went to a concert all by my lonesome for the first time in my life... and I liked it. Let me tell you I liked it more and more...
